Janna Bastow - The Team Toolbox: PM tools in everyday life

Janna Bastow founded ProductCamp London in 2010 and now she's the Co-founder & CEO of ProdPad
Janna is a very good speaker, writer and thinker about products and product management and the ProdPad blog is one of the best feeds that I follow.
I  came across this talk thanks to this amazing list of the "Top 10 Product Talks of 2016" from "mind the PRODUCT". Although the topic of this talk are PM tools, I found it most interesting since it describes her PM work process through the these tools. And  that's what I've highlighted here.

The product management process:

Ideas/feedback backlog ->
Roadmap ->
Product backlog ->
Development Backlog ->
Sprints ->
Shipping^

Separate the product and the development backlog

Product backlog -

  • The opportunity backlog, what you would like to do

Development backlog -

  • The staff you’re going to do. Ready to go tickets
  • Only have the things that are well defined and ready to be built
  • Devs should be able to take a ticket, work on it and be fairly sure they working on the right things
  • Spec’ing -
    • Description - 2 paragraph of what this should do
    • Business case -
      • What problem are you trying to solve
      • What value would it provide to the company if you did solve I
    • User Stories / Jobs they want to be done
    • Mockups / Wireframes

Ideas / feedback backlog

  • Gather ideas from people as easy as you can:
  • no need for sign up
  • no need for title
  • accept any idea
  • get ideas for many where - slack, email, forms ...
  • Nurture your ideas backlog - look at the ideas, sketch something, tag them - and mark the date it last was nurtured
